Orofacial pain can occur from a number of different origins. Sometimes pain that feels like a toothache is actually originating from the TMJ. There are three main nerves that cover the front of the face, and pain somewhere along these nerves can travel away from it's starting point which is called "referred pain". Muscles may also create similar pain which can be identified by "trigger points" when palpated. A full evaluation with x-rays is always recommended to determine the source of pain.
