TMJ and how it affects airway
Many patients with TMJ symptoms tend to have jaws that are very far back in the temporomandibular joint. This is especially critical to evaluate in a developing child as narrow and undeveloped jaws can hinder airway growth. The child will eventually have a predilection to develop obstructive sleep apnea(OSA) as an adult. Adults with TMJ symptoms also commonly have reduced airway capacity from this exact process. A child's development is critical is eliminating any possibility of OSA and proper evaluation of the entire oral complex is a must. The most prevalent source of underdeveloped jaws is orthodontic treatment that focuses primarily on straightening teeth without accommodating for natural growth of the jaws as well. At Manoa Dental, the entire face is evaluated and are a factor in how treatment should progress. Dr. Keri Do is highly skilled in cosmetic dentistry, and use that knowledge in conjunction with orthodontics to create the perfect smile for kids and adults.
