The temporomandibular joint(TMJ) is similar to a Class 3 lever in that it acts as the fulcrum when you chew. Therefore, when you wear down your teeth by having a bad bite(malocclusion), you can exert more force on your teeth as they become more worn. Imagine using tongs to pick up a heavy piece of meat. If you hold the tongs close to the joint, it is very difficult to pick up the meat since most of your strength is at the joint. However if you hold the tongs closer to the middle, it closes the opening, but you can grip the meat much stronger and easier. In comparison, when your teeth wear down, it closes your bite and jaws together over time. Your jaw also becomes much stronger, and it will make your wear much worse as well as make it happen much quicker.
