The problem with nightguards
Many patients show symptoms of wear on their teeth which indicates that they may be grinding their teeth. Many offices prescribe a nightguard to wear during sleep to protect the teeth by acting as a barrier between the upper and lower jaw. While this may work initially, eventually wear spots will develop on the nightguard and it must be replaced. The more critical side-effect is that after prolonged use of a nightguard, their muscles will become trained to the thickness of the nightguard and make the muscles compensate by strengthening and grinding harder.
